AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL
Australian rules football
The SWAS Australian Rules Football Sports program is recognised as the premier regional football talent program in Western Australia. Adopting the principles of long-term athlete development, the program’s primary goal is to enhance the elite level prospects of the South West region’s most talent young footballers.
The program gives the athletes access to a professional training environment and services locally, equivalent to their peers in metropolitan areas.
Professional Services accessed by athletes included: medical screening (sports doctor), musculoskeletal screening, ECG testing, physiotherapy consultations, x-ray and MRI services as required.
Further to these medical services athletes were also provided with specialised: local coaching services (State Academy and WAFC coaches), strengthening and conditioning programs, small group training sessions, fitness and skill testing and analysis, and a link to AFL State Academy programs.
As an important part of the athletes’ SWAS program they are educated through life skills workshops covering nutrition, sports psychology, and recovery techniques.
In addition to addressing sport specific needs, the program also aims to develop community-minded and self-sufficient young men and women.
The South West Academy of Sport not only supports athletes but provides prospects for coaches to access professional development opportunities. Football coach, Jamie Douse is currently completing an AFL level three (3) coaching accreditation along with a Graduate Certificate in Sports Coaching with the Queensland University.
