South West Academy of Sport athlete Mitchell Tuckey has shown not many people can break through water like he can, after he came home with multiple medals in a State contest. The Bunbury surf lifesaver recently returned from this year’s Surf Life Saving WA Pool Rescue Championships with seven medals, including four gold.

Mitchell expressed his pride in the performances, which are a testament to his dedication. “Training in the lead-up to States has been really hard,” he said.

“We have been focusing on our sprints, allowing for improved sprint endurance in racing.” The State competition saw Mitchell achieve many of his personal goals, including his best ever results in nearly all races and making the WA State team.

Going forward, he is looking to build on his results ahead of the National Championships on the Gold Coast in just under a month’s time.

Mitchell expressed his gratitude to the multiple support networks who were backing him. “I have to thank my parents for the countless hours getting me to training every day, along with the trips to Perth every weekend,” he said.

“I would also like to thank my swim coach Denise Duncan who couldn’t get any better”. Mitchell recently received a new scholarship with SWAS, which will see him continue with the academy’s program for another year.

He described the organisation as “amazing”. “They help me so much to achieve my goals and be the best athlete I can be,” he said.
