The South West Academy of Sport hockey program continues to develop the next generation of Hockeyroo and Kookaburra players, with the region’s young talent recently being showcased on the national stage.

A number of partner sport athletes competed for Western Australia at the 2024 Hockey Australia under 18 National Championships, held on the Gold Coast in early July.

During the thrilling week-long tournament, the WA boys gold team finished the tournament in third place.

The side glided through Pool A and remained undefeated until the finals, picking up the bronze medal.

SWAS athlete Toby Blee showed his usual class, being named player of the match in the final round battle against New South Wales.

He played an important part of the team’s success at fullback, repelling numerous opposition attacks while leading counter attacks with his pinpoint passing and overhead balls.

The WA boys black team had a consistent display of determination throughout, with SWAS athletes Rhys Earle, Harry Burns and Austin Northrop playing vital roles. Northrop was outstanding in stopping several scoring opportunities, while Earle made his mark in the midfield.

Burns was forced to adjust to a midfield role, which proved to be a great decision as he showed his work rate and scoring ability. Ruby Williams displayed her athleticism and skill while supporting the WA girls gold team to a fourth-place finish, while Milly McLaurin displayed leadership and impeccable work rate with WA girls black team.

The players’ competition results are a testament to the work behind the scenes with the SWAS hockey program, with athletes presented with the chance to develop their game under the watchful eyes of two-time Olympian Nicole Arrold and Hockey WA South West regional engagement coordinator Keith Old.
