Burekup’s Connor Wright has taken the mountain biking world by storm, dominating his recent international debut.

The South West competitor took out two impressive wins in the Czech Republic.

Wright said he was initially nervous but also excited. “I knew it was going to be a great experience and I was keen to test myself against the European riders,” he said. “Coming away from the races with gold is a major confidence boost.” The Australian national and Oceania cross country champion was one of just six athletes chosen to represent Australia during the European racing competition.

“It’s a different feeling altogether to get a win outside of the country, let alone representing your country,” Wright said.

The South West Academy of Sport athlete did not let the unfavourable weather conditions get in his way either, winning by up to two minutes in each race. “It was super-cold and muddy, something I wasn’t used to compared to Australia’s dry and dusty conditions,” Wright said. “I think I handled it pretty well”.

With Wright only at the start of his two-wheeled career, he has now set his sights on new goals. “This year I plan on taking some time to prepare for my first road cycling nationals, before looking toward next year’s XCO World Championships,” he said.
