The South West Academy of Sport is set to welcome 18 talented athletes over the coming year as part of a scholarship program.
The SWAS Individual Athlete Support Program seeks to develop the potential of rising sporting stars by providing
them with access to resources to support their goals, including high-performance coaching, training and mentorship.
SWAS executive officer Rachel Norman said she was excited to provide young athletes with the opportunity to
pursue their sporting dreams through access to elite sporting services in the South West. “It is exciting because as the sporting community, we get to support and witness the growth from the athletes’
hard work,” she said.
This year’s intake includes Caitlin Musitano, who is hoping to use the program to improve her craft in the world of basketball.
“It is an exciting opportunity to become a better athlete through exposure to strength and fitness, nutrition,
and mental preparation on a new level I haven’t experienced yet,” she said. “I can’t wait to improve my vertical jump, agility and speed, as well as build relationships with other athletes going through a similar journey.”
Previous program participants have gone on to compete at the highest levels, including three Bunbury sport stars competing at this year’s Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. BMX rider Lauren Reynolds will be competing in
her fourth games, while swimmers Kyle Lee and Alex Saffy will be making their debuts.
Intake into the IASP is held annually, which sees athletes identified and invited to participate.
Those aged 15-18, living in the South West and excelling at their chosen sport are eligible to join the program.
Programs for swimming, AFL, hockey and netball are run in partnership with the relevant WA sporting associations
and follow the sport’s endorsed talent pathways.
