South West star has shone brightly at the pinnacle event of the Australian lifesaving calendar.
The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre played host to the 2024 Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships in late January, with Mitchell Tuckey one of the standout performers.
Lifesaving athletes, teams, volunteers and staff from across the nation gathered for three days of intense competition both in the water with speed events, and out-of-water including initiative tests and CPR challenges.
The event has been running since 1987 and is a testament to the dedication and skill of Australian lifesavers.
Last month’s championship saw participants ranging from first-time pool lifesavers to seasoned veterans, showcasing their talent and commitment to lifesaving.
Competitors vied for prestigious championship trophies across various divisions, from under 14 to masters, with each trophy bearing the name of a revered figure in the history of Royal Life Saving, both in the UK and Australia, who championed the importance of rescue skills.
Mitchell made his mark on this year’s event, clinching the Men’s Junior Australia Cup — Dr Ian Mackie Memorial Trophy for under-16 male superlifesaver.
His exceptional performance also earned him recognition as a high performer in the overall under 16 male category.
To compete in the Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships, participants must hold a bronze star (15 years and under), bronze medallion, or an equivalent lifesaving award, and maintain current financial membership with Royal Life Saving or Surf Life Saving Australia.
The APLSC not only crowns champions but also fosters camaraderie and celebrates the extensive contributions of Royal Life Saving members to the lifesaving movement.
It serves as a platform for lifelong friendships to flourish amid the shared passion for saving lives and promoting water safety.
