Former scholarship holder appointed as SWAS athlete mentor

As part of its commitment to providing high-level support to locally-based young sports men and women, the South West Academy of Sport has announced the appointment of its first athlete mentor.

Former SWAS athlete Lowen Ferry has stepped into the newly-created casual role, which will see him determining the assistance the academy’s aspiring athletes need to reach their potential on and off the sports field.

“I am a former South West Academy of Sport athlete,” Ferry said.

“And I really, really enjoyed the process of what I was able to get out of SWAS and the support I had being in the South West as a regional athlete.

“So, to be on the other side and be able to support athletes and be involved in sport and the community – which I’m so passionate about – is really fantastic.

“When I was a SWAS athlete, I quickly realised how much of a passion I had for sport, particularly in the South West, and being on various club committees, part of different events.

“I knew it was a career path I wanted to head down. I’m very passionate about all sports.”

Ferry, who was in SWAS for cycling but is currently transitioning to triathlon, will be competing in this week’s SunSmart Busselton 100.
