Superfast swimmer Alex Saffy has been delivered a $10,000 boost on his journey to Paris 2024 – this year’s Wally Foreman Foundation Scholarship.

The 16-year-old “Bunbury Bullet” was recently announced the recipient of the honour at the annual WAIS awards and will benefit from being able to access training and attend camps in support of his aspirations.

“I’m very appreciative to be the recipient of the scholarship,” Saffy said.

“And yeah, it’s a big surprise. A lot of people applied for the scholarship, so to be the person who gets it is a pretty big deal.”

The 16-year-old wunderkind, who has been setting a high standard in the water, has his sights set on gaining international classification in February ahead of selection trials relating to the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships.

South West Academy of Sport chief executive officer Bernice Butlion congratulated Saffy on his latest achievement.

“Alex is the first SWAS athlete to win the Wally Foreman Foundation Scholarship. Through his sporting endeavours, Alex has achieved so much in a short space of time,” Butlion said.

“Alex’s love for swimming is so evident and he will only continue to improve and hopefully he will be the one to watch in future Paralympics.”
